As a manufacturer of aerosol filling machines, we are often asked by customers: “Which type of aerosol can should I choose for my product?” The answer depends on the product’s chemical composition, target market, filling line configuration, and safety requirements. This article briefly compares three mainstream aerosol containers—aluminum cans, tin cans (tinplate cans), and plastic bottles—to help you make the right decision quickly.
Aluminum cans are seamless, with no welds, and feature a corrosion-resistant coating on the inner wall, with a pressure rating of 12–15 bar. They are lightweight, offer high-quality printing, and are resistant to rust.
Suitable for: Mid-to-high-end products such as hair spray, perfume, sunscreen spray, and medicinal inhalers.
Filling Notes: Thin walls (0.15–0.25 mm) require specialized low-pressure sealing nozzles; aluminum debris must be purged before filling.
Tin cans typically feature a three-piece welded construction with a pressure rating of 10–12 bar. They offer low costs, a mature supply chain, and high mechanical strength.
Suitable for: High-volume fast-moving consumer goods such as insecticides, automotive care products, spray paints, and industrial aerosols.
Filling Notes: The weld seam is a critical weak point; weld seam detection sensors and water bath leak testing are required.
Plastic bottles (primarily PET) are manufactured using the stretch-blow molding process, offering transparency, light weight, and impact resistance. LPG can be used as a propellant (isobutane has the best compatibility; DME requires caution), but capacity is typically limited to 118 ml (220 ml in the EU).
Suitable for: Air fresheners, foaming shower gels, food aerosols (whipped cream), cosmetics, etc.
Filling Notes: Long-term compatibility between PET and the propellant must be verified; non-standard bottle neck designs require quick-change seals and ovality detection; explosion-proof measures are required when using flammable propellants.
Prioritize brand premium and aesthetics → Aluminum cans
Prioritize cost and production volume → Steel cans
Prioritize transparency and safety → Plastic bottles (strictly control propellant and capacity)
