Aerosol Container: Types, Requirements & Selection Guide

An aerosol container is an important part of an aerosol product. It holds the formulation and, depending on the aerosol system, the propellant or a separated product-propellant system.

Unlike ordinary packaging, an aerosol container must meet specific requirements for pressure resistance, dimensional accuracy, compatibility and safety.

The most common aerosol containers include tinplate cans, aluminum cans and PET bottles. The right choice depends on the product formulation, dispensing system, pressure requirements and filling process.

1.What Is an Aerosol Container?

An aerosol container is a pressure-resistant container designed for storing and dispensing aerosol products.

It works together with other components, such as the aerosol valve, actuator and dip tube, to deliver the product in the required spray, foam or other form.

Therefore, container selection is not only a packaging decision. It is also related to product formulation, propellant selection and the aerosol filling process.

2. Basic Requirements for Aerosol Containers

A suitable aerosol container should meet the basic requirements for dimensions, pressure resistance, compatibility and safety.

(1)Dimensions

The container should have consistent dimensions to ensure proper valve mounting, crimping and machine handling.

(2)Pressure Resistance

The container must safely withstand the required internal pressure and provide adequate leak and burst resistance.

(3)Compatibility

The container and its internal coating should be compatible with the product formulation and propellant to prevent corrosion, leakage or product quality changes.

(4)Safety

The container should meet the applicable safety, material and regulatory requirements for its intended application.

3. Main Types of Aerosol Containers

Aerosol containers are mainly available in tinplate, aluminum and PET.

(1)Tinplate Aerosol Cans

Tinplate cans are widely used for conventional aerosol products because of their good mechanical strength and suitability for high-volume production.

Common applications include:

• Insecticides
• Air fresheners
• Household products
• Automotive products
• Industrial aerosols

(2)Aluminum Aerosol Cans

Aluminum cans are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and provide a clean appearance. They are widely used for personal care, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

Common applications include:

• Personal care products
• Cosmetics
• Pharmaceutical products
• Premium aerosol products

Aluminum cans are also widely used with bag-on-valve (BOV) systems, although they can also be used for conventional aerosol products.

(3)PET Aerosol Bottles

PET aerosol bottles are used in selected applications where lightweight construction, transparency or packaging appearance is important.

They can be used with conventional aerosol or BOV systems when the container is specifically designed and tested for the required pressure conditions.

4. Aerosol Container and Filling Process

The container should be considered together with the aerosol filling system. Different container sizes, materials and valve configurations may require different machine settings and tooling.

(1)Information Required for Machine Selection

Before selecting an aerosol filling machine, manufacturers normally need to confirm:

• Container material
• Container diameter and height
• Container opening
• Valve specification
• Product filling volume
• Propellant type
• Filling method

(2)Conventional Aerosol and BOV Systems

The filling process may differ between conventional aerosol products and BOV products.

In a conventional aerosol system, the product and propellant are generally contained in the same container.

In a BOV system, the product is separated from the propellant inside a flexible bag.

Therefore, the container, valve, filling method and machine configuration should be considered as one complete system.

5. How to Choose the Right Aerosol Container?

Container selection should be based on the complete aerosol product system rather than the container alone.

(1)Product and Propellant

Consider:

• Product formulation
• Propellant type
• Product-container compatibility
• Required internal pressure

(2)Container Requirements

Consider:

• Material
• Size and dimensions
• Internal coating
• Pressure resistance
• Appearance requirements

6. Conclusion

An aerosol container is an important part of the complete aerosol system. Its material, dimensions, pressure resistance, coating and compatibility directly affect product safety and production performance.

Tinplate cans, aluminum cans and PET bottles are suitable for different aerosol applications. The right choice should be based on the product formulation, dispensing system, pressure requirements and filling process.

By considering the container together with the aerosol valve, propellant and filling equipment, manufacturers can build a safer and more reliable aerosol packaging system.
